Research Program Assistant

The Department of Epidemiology is seeking a full time Research Program Assistant that will work with participants of research studies who are primarily 70 years and older.  This person will independently perform telephone and in-person interviews for several projects at the GW Comstock Center, including home visits and nursing home visits.

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform telephone interviews according to research scripts and protocols, including follow-up, screening, and recruitment questions
  • Travel to participant homes or nursing homes to complete these interviews will be required 50-75% of the time.
  • Correctly record participant responses using a laptop or desktop computer, or paper forms
  • Perform accurate data entry of study forms into multiple databases and schedules
  • Recruit and schedule participants for visits and provide visit instructions
  • Prepare and mail participant appointment packets for scheduled participants as necessary 
  • Record and review interviews for quality assurance and standardization
  • Attend staff meetings and recruitment meetings
  • Achieve and maintain study-specific certification in interview procedures
  • Other duties as necessary

 

Minimum qualifications:

 

High school diploma/GED required.  Some related experience.

 

Preferred qualifications:

 

Associate's degree or some college courses preferred. Experience conducting interviews, preferably using standardized scripts and protocols. Prefer some related coursework or administrative experience in research or medical office.

 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 

  • Excellent communication required, particularly on the telephone
  • Ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of participants and their families
  • Computer and data entry skills required
  • Sensitivity and discretion required to interact with older participants who may have hearing and cognitive decline, as well as changing life circumstances
  • Ability to travel to participant homes and nursing homes to complete these interviews
  • Reliable transportation required for the purpose of completing home visits

 

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

 

  • Ability to complete telephone calls for extended periods of time; hearing/visual ability appropriate for the purposes of assessing and communicating with study participants during interviews 
  • Ability to perform data entry/typing into a personal or laptop computer

Starting Salary Range:   $11.95 - $16.44

Employee Group: Full-time

Schedule: Monday – Friday/ 40 hrs.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
