CTY In Person Math Instructor, Hoboken, NJ

CTY is seeking CTY in Person Math instructor, Hoboken, NJ to teach a rigorous math course to approximately 12-25 students. The 9-month classes run from September to May for students in grades 2-7. Instructors' core responsibilities are to plan and conduct their classes within CTY guidelines and to monitor and evaluate the progress of each student.


Instructors' daily working hours are based on assigned class times, additional class planning and preparation, back-to-school night, two parent/teacher meeting sessions, training, and team meetings. Instructors will teach in-person at their designated school in Hoboken, New Jersey. Each class session is 90 minutes, Monday-Friday. Hired candidates may elect to teach between 1-4 courses daily and will be paid by the number of courses they teach. Instructional staff report directly to the CTY Program Manager.


Class Times

  • Specific class times will be posted when they become available, all classes are between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Use the provided CTY online curriculum and instructional materials to develop daily objectives and lessons.
  • Regularly assess if objectives are being achieved and provide remediation, acceleration, or extension activities through individualized and small group instruction to meet the needs of each student.
  • Monitor students' academic progress toward stated objectives of instruction. Effectively communicate progress with parents and program leadership.
  • Provide meaningful and detailed feedback on assignments in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a positive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Maintain productive relationships through communication with students, parents/guardians, program leadership, and school staff. Respond to email within one business day.
  • Escalate any concerns following CTY guidelines.

Required Special Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of best practices for teaching math to students in grades 2-7.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Positive, proactive, and professional written and spoken communication skills using various technology is critical.
  • Must be student oriented.

  • Applicants must be able to report to their assigned school in Hoboken, New Jersey, during the assigned time(s), which will be between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday – Friday, from September to May.
  • The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check, fingerprinting, and will need a Hudson County Substitute Certification.

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Operate a computer and other office machinery.
  • Communicate regularly via email, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and telephone with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an school environment; bending, kneeling or standing may be required.


Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two years of math teaching experience for students in grades 2-7.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in one of the following areas
    • Elementary Teacher K-6 Standard, Provisional, CEAS or CE
    • Middle School Subject Matter Specialization in Math or STEM
  • A master’s Degree in mathematics or mathematics education or related field is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
