Under general supervision of the senior administrative manager, the employee performs those clinical activities necessary for the smooth flow of patients. The role is consistent with the standards and guidelines of the American Association of Medical Assistants and the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and other regulatory agencies.  The technician will perform variety of duties to assist in the care and safety of the patients of the Medical Oncology suite at Green Spring Station.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for physicians, chemotherapy, nurse visits by taking vital signs, height, weight, and assess the need for and perform orthostatic vital signs. Complete meaningful use questionnaire with patient and enter into EPIC.
  • Assist patients to exam room and prepare them for exam/diagnostic procedures.
  • Obtain blood samples.  Label all specimens and forward to appropriate laboratory. (Skills must be signed off by senior clinical nurse.)
  • Converts peripheral IVs to heplocks and vice versa.
  • Initiates IV fluids for chemotherapy.
  • Assist with adverse drug reactions.
  • Keep exam rooms neat and organized.  Change table paper and prepare needed supplies between patients.  Responsible for changing linens in treatment room as needed.
  • Maintains aseptic technique.
  • Assist in preparation, maintenance and pre-visit auditing of medical records.
  • Responsible for maintenance of inventory of clinical and paper supplies and linen in exam/consult rooms and in treatment area.  Determine when items are needed, following established par level system.  Receive items ordered.  Open boxes and restock supply rooms, exam/consult rooms and treatment area.
  • Assist physician with procedures, as required.  Chaperone exams if needed.
  • Observe and reports conditions of IV sites, including central catheters.
  • Perform dressing changes on all catheters.
  • Order x-rays, outside films, lab results and reports as needed.
  • Perform skilled tasks such as venipuncture and starting IVs.  (Skills must be signed off by the senior clinical nurse.)
  • Assist patients with transfer to/from wheelchairs, stretchers, etc.
  • Requests for prescription refills, taking/relaying telephone messages, and entering data into the patients’ chart in EPIC.
  • Direct patient flow and run errands.
  • Ensure proper disposal of potentially infectious waste.
  • Troubleshoot infusion pumps.
  • Check and record for malfunctioning medical equipment, daily.
  • Participate in skill development.
  • Perform copying and faxing.
  • Directs and assist very ill patients to the treatment area.
  • Function as part of the collaborative practice group.
  • Gather teaching materials and constructs educational packets.
  • Administer medication, subcutaneous and intramuscular, with direct supervisor from a clinical nurse. (Must be signed of my medical director.)
  • Assist in preparation, maintenance and pre-visit auditing of electronic medical records.
  • Scan all outside ancillary reports into EPIC.  Audit the documents to ensure proper indexing.
  • Delivers stock medications
  • Prepares medications for patients use accurately following established departmental and area procedures.
  • Documents preparation and distribution of medications in patients’ medical records, and when applicable, in research documentation.
  • Operate various machines i.e. Nucleus, computer software, etc.
  • Replenish stock medications.
  • Maintain area equipment and supplies.
  • Accurately stages medications for dose preparation.
  • Fills new drug orders prior to pharmacist final check.
  • Prepares injectable medications according to established procedures prior to pharmacist final check.
  • Prepares chemotherapeutic agents/hazardous drugs according to established procedures prior to pharmacist final check.
  • Labels container/packages prior to pharmacist verification.
  • Initials product labels according to area policy.
  • Acts as an ambassador to the pharmacy.
  • Plans daily activities with the pharmacist and lead technician according to the needs of patients.
  • Maintains clean work environment according to state regulations.
  • Adheres to Confidentiality Statement and HIPPA regulations
  • Works cooperatively within the unit and with other units and departments
  • Willingly exchanges appropriate and professional information with co-workers



High School diploma or GED required.  Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required.  If not currently certified/registered, must become certified/registered within 90 days of date of hire.  Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross required.  Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during duration of employment in this position. 


Note – in order to be eligible for certification/registration, successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program or five or more years of primary medical care medical assistant experience is required.

  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
