We are seeking a CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars Program Assistant  who aims to provide academic enrichment to students in Baltimore City Public Schools who show high academic potential. This year, the CTY BES program will be held virtually due to health concerns surrounding COVID-19. In addition to their academic classes, students will have the opportunity to participate in activity periods several times each week. Program Assistants (PAs) are responsible for leading afternoon activity periods in a digital platform (Google Classroom and Zoom). Sample activities include arts and crafts, games, dance, and mindfulness activities. Although certain duties are typical, tasks and responsibilities can and do change according to each day’s needs and may vary slightly.


NOTE: Applicants must be able to get fingerprinted in Baltimore City.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Assistant's plan and lead all activity periods. Additional job responsibilities of the PA include but are not limited to:

  • Attend the mandatory training/orientation program prior to the program start. Attend all sessions of the training/orientation program.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Create and facilitate activities for all of the Activity Periods; plan for at least 50 students each period.
  • Develop asynchronous activities to be included in a file of activities students can do independently.
  • Attend all virtual field trips and assist with classroom management.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • At least 2 semesters (including summer terms) working with children.
  • Experience using online educational tools such as Zoom.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • GPA of 3.0 or better is preferred.
  • Current enrollment in College/Some College coursework preferred.
  • Experience organizing recreational programs or planning events is preferred.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, familiarity with google classroom and Zoom platforms.


Internal & External Contacts Required:

  • Regular contact with the assigned instructor, students, and families.
  • Occasional contact with Site Director, Academic Dean, Emerging Scholars co-directors and BCPSS Educational Specialist before and during program.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and video calls with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment.


Additional Information:

  • REMOTE LOCATION: Applicants must be authorized to work in the US, and must either live in the US or another area in which JHU has a business entity. Applicants must be able to get fingerprinted in Baltimore City.
  • All employees participating in or serving children in University programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
