Facilities Assistant

Starting Salary Range:  $12.97 - $17.87/hour

Schedule (hours/days):  Tues – Fri 3p.m.-11p.m.  Sat 6 a.m.-2p.m.

General summary/purpose:  Handle day to day operations of a P/T graduate campus in the building/grounds/maintenance department for the Office of the Provost in Rockville, MD.  The campus operates 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  This position will fill a vacancy in the evening facilities/grounds/maintenance department.  The candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision and have a strong work ethic. 


Specific duties & responsibilities:

Inspects buildings and other structures to determine functional systems and detect malfunctions and needed repair
making notes and recommendations using a pre-established check sheet.

Performs minor electrical maintenance to include but not be limited to replacement or repair of fixtures (e.g. wall switches and outlets, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs and tubes, ballast, sockets, fuses, minor appliances, cords, etc.) using appropriate hand, power and specialty tools.

Performs plumbing maintenance (e.g. replacement or repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging of drains, trenching and laying new lines, replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices, etc.).

Performs painting, carpentry and masonry work (e.g. preparing surfaces and using brush, sprayer, or roller to apply paints, etc.).

Order parts and maintain required documents.

Performs other work related duties as assigned.

Works on small motors, pumps, etc.

Requires professional interaction with staff and vendors.

Respond to emergency calls / security calls.

Member of essential personnel

Rotate on call.


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

High School diploma/GED required. One year related experience required. Technical School training may be considered in lieu of some experience.


1-2 years facility experience to include the following preferred:

  • Knowledge of HVAC    
  • Basic carpentry
  • Basic plumbing
  • Basic electricity
  • Basic locksmith
  • Knowledge of all facets of painting

Mechanically inclined and familiar with power tools, generators, compressors.

MD Driver’s license with clean driving record

Must be able to communicate in English (oral and written).

Professional attitude


Preferred qualifications:

Previous experience with boilers, cooling towers, chillers and air handlers.

Previous experience with Siemens equipment preferred but not required.


Any specific physical requirements for the job:

Ability to lift 70 pounds of weight

Carry, lift and deliver supplies and tools as well as work on ladders and scaffolding.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
