Purpose of Position:

This position provides general laboratory assistance and course support for instructors in the Biotechnology teaching laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University, Montgomery County Campus.  Part-time schedule is for approximately two days per week at the Montgomery County campus and one day at the Homewood campus. Will occasionally be required to work on Saturdays. Total hours worked per week will not exceed 19.

Note: This position is not benefits eligible.

Knowledge and Skill:

  • Familiarity with molecular biology and cell culture techniques
  • Ability to operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, balances, microscopes, incubators, and thermocyclers
  • Familiarity with using biological safety cabinets
  • Proficiency in using various software applications for laboratory equipment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be well-organized and able to meet established deadlines

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification: 

  • High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework required.
  • Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field with research or industry laboratory experience preferred.  One year of related work experience preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

General Laboratory Assistance

  • Maintains order within the laboratory
  • Monitors inventory levels of reagents and supplies
  • Orders and tracks supplies
  • Maintains laboratory equipment – contacting service representatives as needed -- and yearly certifications
  • Prepares reagents/solutions/supplies for instructors
  • Maintains laboratory records

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
