We are seeking a CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholar Program Academic Dean  (Academic Program Administrator) who has primary responsibility for supervising the academic staff, coordinating the academic program, ensuring the quality of instruction, and addressing student performance issues. In addition to promoting appreciation and understanding of CTY’s philosophy, policies, and procedures among the instructional staff, this role promotes communication between the instructional staff and the administrative staff. A key activity of the academic dean is to provide training and support to the instructional staff.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

A member of the site administrative staff, the academic dean assumes primary responsibility for supervising, supporting and providing guidance to the instructional staff who come from a variety of educational backgrounds and have diverse teaching skills. Additional job responsibilities of the academic dean include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct formal and informal classroom observations and provides feedback and coaching on teaching strategies and classroom management.
  • Collaborates with curriculum writers to resolve any concerns with content or implementation of curriculum.
  • Address student performance issues and oversee the creation of student evaluations.
  • Provide logistical support for field trips, class projects, and other presentations. 


As a member of the site administration, the Academic Dean is expected to:

  • Work together as a team, keeping overall program goals in sight while managing a range of details.
  • Help set the appropriate tone for the community as described in staff handbooks and other program documents.
  • Anticipate and prevent potential problems.
  • Communicate promptly, clearly, and sensitively with other administrators, staff, students, parents, the host institution, and the CTY office in Baltimore.
  • Model professionalism.
  • Represent the philosophy and policies of CTY in a manner that fosters cooperation and respect among summer staff, students, host institution staff, and full-time CTY staff throughout the program.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university is required.
  • At least two years of related experience is required, such as instruction or tutoring of adolescent students.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or administrative role, preferably in an educational setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate training in an academic discipline.
  • Significant teaching experience.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, comfortable using Microsoft Office and web-based applications like Box.


Internal & External Contacts Required:

  • Contact with the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars co-directors and BCPSS Educational Specialist before and during program.
  • Regular contact with site director, instructors, ESOL specialist, SPED specialist, and students throughout program.
  • Occasional contact with teacher’s assistants and students’ families as needed.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.


Supervisory Responsibility:

  • The Academic Dean is supervised directly by the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars Program Manager.
  • Provides oversight of the instructors, ESOL Specialist, and SPED Specialist, and the indirect supervision of Virtual Program Assistants.


Additional Information:

  • Applicants must either live in the US or another area in which JHU has a business entity.
  • Must be able to complete fingerprinting requirements in-person at a Baltimore City School Facility prior to the start of the program.
  • All employees participating in or serving children in University programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
