Virtual Program Assistant

The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth is a nonprofit dedicated to identifying and developing the talents of academically advanced K-12 students around the world. We provide today’s brightest students with fun, challenging courses; a community of engaged learners; and a strong foundation for future success in college and their careers.


CTY is piloting an online activities program for all students enrolled in our different virtual learning programs. This means that, in addition to their academic classes, students will have the opportunity to participate in activity periods several times each day.

We are seeking Virtual Program Assistants (PAs)  who are responsible for leading hour-long activity periods in a digital space (Microsoft Teams). Sample activities include arts and crafts, trivia, speed friending, appreciation events, games, yoga, and dance. Although certain duties are typical, tasks and responsibilities can and do change according to each day’s needs and may vary slightly.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

PAs plan and lead activity periods daily. Activities will be offered from May 23 to August 21, 2022 for our summer session and training will occur before the program begins.


Job responsibilities of the PA include but are not limited to:

  • Attending all sessions of the mandatory training/orientation program prior to the program start.
  • Planning, taking attendance for, and running the daily activity periods.  
  • Managing student behavior, following up with disruptive students, and making program supervisors aware of any problems, including submission of paperwork.
  • Attending all meetings during the program.
  • Providing timely updates and feedback to program supervisors to inform the scheduling, design, and future iterations of the online activities program.
  • Participating in scheduled observations and other professional development activities.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • At least 2 semesters (including summer terms) working with children.
  • Experience using online educational tools such as Microsoft Teams.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience and proficiency using online meeting and/or webinar platforms. 
  • PAs will be required to communicate regularly via Teams and occasionally via email with minors and must be able to exchange accurate, age-appropriate, and timely information in these settings.
  • Prior experience organizing recreational programs in a youth-based setting or planning events.
  • Maturity, responsibility, energy, and creativity; prior experience engaging elementary, middle, and/or high school students in social activities.


Internal & External Contacts:

  • Regular contact with the leadership of the online activities program.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer and do so for extended periods of time. 
  • Operate a computer and office machinery. 
  • Communicate regularly via email, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and telephone with internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings. 
  • Work varied hours including weekends and evenings as determined with supervisor. 


Remote Location:

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the US, and must either live in the US or another area in which JHU has a business entity.
  • All employees participating in or serving children in University programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
