Clinical Nurse

We are seeking a Clinical Nurse. Working in the Division of Cardiology at the Green Spring Station outpatient location, this position supports Cardiologists with their outpatient clinical duties. The incumbent is accountable for the delivery of comprehensive care, in collaboration with the provider and other members of the health care team, to the client population through assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation. This role helps foster an environment that optimizes client well-being and outcomes.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Reviews physician EPIC-in-baskets on a daily basis, triaging appropriately.
  • Pends new medications and prescription refills in Epic for physician signature.
  • Assists with ordering patient lab and study tests as needed, and routing orders in EPIC to physicians for their co-signature.
  • Works with cardiology scheduling team to help schedule tests as needed.
  • Assists in completion of prior authorizations.
  • Follows up on lab and study test results, notifying the physician and patient as appropriate.
  • Returns patient phone calls and responds to appropriate Epic in-basket questions.
  • Prepares physicians for outpatient clinic appointments including obtaining detailed medical records for patients with complex medical histories and ensuring records are scanned into Epic.
  • Populates patient history in EPIC prior to appointments.
  • Generates patient problem lists as requested by physicians.
  • Is aware of the inclusion/exclusion criteria for ongoing clinical trials to help identify possible research candidates.
  • Attend clinic with physicians, obtain/update history and interim concerns from patients, and help document patient clinic encounters in EPIC.
  • Practices nursing per clinical protocols and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland.
  • May perform case management services to patients from initial intake visit through termination of services.
  • Assists in the development/updating of unit-based protocols, standardized care maps and/or care plans.
  • Knows the key formal and informal goals of the division and the clinic team and asks for guidance appropriately.
  • Uses own judgment in achieving goals of good clinic practices, good documentation, and interactions with staff and health care professionals.
  • Exercises excellent clinical and administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people in the workplace and potential or actual research subjects.
  • Uses judgment to maintain and improve the quality of service within the program.
  • Exercises mature judgment and remains flexible in stressful situations.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.
  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process to include verification of CPR (BLS) certification is required prior to start date.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
