Research Data Analyst/Pre-Doctoral Researcher

The Center for Health Systems and Policy Modeling at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a motivated and experienced Research Data Analyst/Pre-Doctoral Researcher (Research Data Analyst) to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver, able to effectively manage multiple projects at once, and self-motivated with a strong attention to detail. This role offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or early career researchers to gain valuable experience working on novel health policy research before pursuing a PhD.


The preferred start date for this role is June or July 2025, and the work address for this hybrid position will be 555 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC, 20001. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct statistical analysis and programming using R and Stata or other similar programming languages.
  • Manage and organize research data, ensuring data integrity.
  • Perform comprehensive literature reviews and background research.
  • Write research reports, abstracts, and sections of peer reviewed publications focusing on Medicare health care policy and economics.
  • Develop content for research briefs and policy reports.
  • Prepare presentations of findings for conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  • Maintain a database of publications, presentations, and other materials.
  • Collaborate closely with Dr. Melinda Buntin and other researchers, coordinate team efforts as needed.
  • Mentor junior researchers and students.

The Center for Health Systems and Policy Modeling, led by Dr. Melinda B. Buntin, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Economics aims to combine cutting-edge microsimulation techniques with policy expertise to shape the future of U.S. health care delivery.


Affiliated with the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Carey Business School, the Center advances understanding of the U.S. health care system, informs decision-makers, and improves health care delivery, outcomes, and affordability through rigorous interdisciplinary research, microsimulation and predictive modeling, and policy analysis.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • Advanced programming skills with an openness to learn new languages.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with academic writing styles and formats.
  • Interest in working on a fast-paced team applying novel research approaches to issues in health policy, health care spending, and payment reform.
  • Ability to effectively work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
