Associate Director of Development, International

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.


Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a remote work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week.  The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.


Reporting to the Director of Development and based in Washington, D.C., the Associate Director of Development for International is responsible for formulating and implementing individual fundraising strategies, setting priorities, carrying out cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities for SAIS in Asia and the Middle East, with an emphasis on key emerging research centers and initiatives on the Study of Contemporary China, the Indo-Pacific, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center (HNC), Middle East Studies, and other identified or related priorities.


Key responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for increasing philanthropic revenue from Asia and the Middle East.
  • Build and maintain a portfolio of 75-100 individual prospects from across the regions, ensuring personalized engagement and stewardship. Conduct at least 100 in-person or virtual visit visits annual to cultivate, solicit, and steward meaningful relationships.
  • Partner with colleagues across SAIS to develop strategy and create experiences in the region.
  • Strengthen the volunteer leadership pipeline and manage other volunteer fundraising groups advocating in Asia and the Middle East on behalf of Johns Hopkins SAIS.
  • Implement strategy for prospect research, identification, qualification, and pipeline development of new prospective donors, at the annual and major gift level.
  • Build effective partnerships with the offices of gift planning, annual giving, regional and international programs, corporate and foundations relations, institutional donor relations, prospect research, and business services to meet these fundraising goals.
  • Prepare compelling proposals, solicitation letters, and gift agreements tailored to individual donor interests and institutional priorities, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and donor intent.
  • 40-50% of travel to Asia, the Middle East, and possibly within the United States is required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years related experience, with at least one year of professional experience required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five to seven years of progressive experience,  preferably in development, annual giving, and alumni relations in higher education or comparable and relevant experience in a non-profit or private sector institution.
  • Master’s degree holders are preferred, with advanced training in International Studies or another related field, as well as proficiency in Asian and Middle Eastern language with a preference for Arabic, Korean, or Mandarin.
  • The successful candidate must have a demonstrated track record of soliciting and closing major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.

This salary range does not include all components of the SAIS compensation program.  This position may be eligible for a discretionary bonus.  Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary slightly from the salary range stated herein.  For more information, please contact the hiring department.


Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
