Admissions Director, Grad Prof Programs

The Admissions Director, Graduate Professional Programs provides strategic leadership and effective management for the Office of Admissions. S/He is a key member of the strategic enrollment team and is directly responsible for setting and achieving projected enrollment metrics each semester.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and implementation of data-driven marketing, recruitment, admissions, and yield strategies designed to meet ambitious enrollment goals;
  • Management of admissions procedures for online programs as well as on ground programs offered at three campuses in Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC, and Montgomery County MD;
  • Manage admissions processing; management and optimization of available application, promotion, and yield technologies;
  • Direct quality assessment of admissions applications;
  • Representation of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) to domestic and international academic institutions, alumni, professional development partners, and prospective students;
  • Recruit, hire and onboard admission staff;
  • Manage the admissions operational budget.


This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Marketing, Admissions, & Enrollment.  The director supervises six full-time staff members as well as a graduate student employee. The position demands an ability to work collaboratively with marketing, web management, registration, student services, academic program directors, summer & intersession. The director also works closely with JHU central services such as the Registrar, Financial Aid, etc. to support a comprehensive approach to admissions.


Additional responsibilities:

  • Promote AAP programs through formal and informal interactions with prospective students, parents, peer institutions, associations, and organizations.
  • Oversee the processing of all admissions applications, quality check, admission committee decision conveyance, and in some cases directly evaluate applications.
  • Oversee the development and management of admissions, recruiting, event, and yield systems and databases.
  • Collaborate with marketing on the design and production of marketing publications including, but not limited to, general and degree-specific brochures, email communications, promotional materials, recruiting display and presentation, and other digital recruiting assets.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of AAP-wide and program specific, domestic and international, on-campus and virtual information sessions, yield events, and open houses.
  • Represent AAP and the admissions office within Johns Hopkins by serving on the UADC (University Admissions Directors Committee), Student Services Excellence Initiative – Admissions Committee (SSEI-Admissions), AAP Managers team, National Graduate Admissions Professionals (NAGAP), University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA), and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Advisors (AACRAO).
  • Plan and travel for domestic and international recruitment functions, including prospective student information sessions, Idealist recruitment fairs, and conferences and association events in support of Academic Program Directors.
  • Provide the deans, other administrators, faculty, and external partners with detailed admissions system access, data, analysis, and reports.
  • Communicate admissions issues with faculty, administrators, and deans.
  • Provide guidance to prospective and admitted students about the admission process.
  • Organize Admission Committee meetings.
  • Monitor and update all content related to online applications and admissions websites for accuracy.
  • Participate in the process of reviewing and approving new program and concentration proposals.


Opportunities to Make Impact:

Identify creative solutions to enhance the student experience through the admission process. The university is engaged in a comprehensive initiative to review and implement enterprise systems for admission including a new admission system and CRM. The Director of Admission will play a pivotal role in advancing these objectives. Setting the strategic course for the Admissions department will also require an ability to create a predictive data analytics model that will inform recruitment goals and enrollment planning.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

50% Graduate Admissions/Enrollment/Recruitment

  • Oversees the processing of over 3,500 admissions applications and nearly 16,000 enrollments annually, including many international students, for master’s degree, post-bachelor's certificate, graduate certificate, and executive education programs.
  • Manages AAP post-bachelor’s and graduate student recruitment, admissions, enrollment, tracking and recruitment marketing efforts (e.g., events, policies, website content, publications, and databases) in collaboration with academic departments.
  • Manages the CRM, application system, application document repository, application SIS interface, and similar systems within the office.
  • Aids academic departments in meeting their admission and enrollment goals.
  • Manages and supports quarterly online and in person information sessions for each of AAP graduate programs to help them achieve sufficient interest to drive projected enrollment.
  • Manages AAP’s recruiting representative located in China, and provides guidance for attending recruiting fairs for graduate and summer programs.
  • Works with OIS on visa issues for international students, and with academic departments on credential evaluation of international applicants, where appropriate.
  • Works with Student Services to coordinate and manage bi-annual Graduate Student Orientations.
  • Implements a recruitment marketing plan for recruitment and admitted student yield.
  • Works with AAP Leadership team and KSAS Dean’s office to develop and implement diversity recruiting initiatives.
  • Provide excellent customer service for applicants, matriculates, and departments.


20% Information Technology

  • Implements technology initiatives that improve recruiting yield, graduate admissions and enrollment processes (e.g., inquiry development, inquiry to application yield, online application and enrollment services, databases and file sharing, admit to enrollment yield)
  • Participates in graduate information systems planning, project management, service excellence, and system update and implementation coordination with other AAP departments, other JHU schools, Mt Washington, Hobson’s and Slate, Salesforce, and other mainframe systems.
  • Develops metrics to gauge effective admissions and recruiting processes and outcomes, collects and reports data related to the graduate admissions and the enrollment process in coordination with the Data Analyst.
  • Administers prospective student and admitted but not enrolled student customer service surveys.

5% Summer Programs

  • Works cooperatively with Summer Programs to help drive policies and processes that align with AAP and KSAS.
  • Helps develop streamlined admissions flows for Summer Programs.
  • Coordinates AAP’s international recruiter located in China to ensure proper allocation of time for development of Summer Programs partnerships with constituents in Asia, India, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific.


5% Other Duties as Assigned

  • Serves on related division, school, and university committees
  • Develops, administers, and manages the enrollment office budget


Additional priorities and challenges include:

  • Participate in the ongoing divisional strategic enrollment planning process.
  • Actively solicit input from stakeholders, evaluate recommendations, implement changes as appropriate, and provide timely feedback on admissions policy, procedures, and practice.
  • Recruit an increasingly diverse and talented student body demonstrating strong quantitative and qualitative traits.
  • Increase recruitment of international students as well as those with specific backgrounds and interests in fields such as biotechnology, communication, environmental science and policy, security studies, geospatial intelligence, geographic information systems, applied economics, and government analytics.  
  • Devise strategies for improving the balance between high demand, low enrolling, and growth potential academic programs.
  • Automate and/or streamline routine manual processes.
  • With the aid of the Data Analyst improve admissions data collection, report generation, and data dissemination among institutional stakeholders.
  • Mentor and develop staff, advocating for needed human resources based on an analysis of workload with the aim of maximizing budget efficiencies and staff work-life balance;
  • Cultivate relationships with AAP alumni and engage them in the ongoing work through active participation in recruitment and yield activities.
  • Conduct an annual assessment of admissions processes and decisions in collaboration with the program directors to drive efficiencies and decision turnaround.
  • Maintain an admissions operations and staff duty manuals, and document processes and changes. 
  • Work in cooperation with the administrative, marketing, and registration teams to evaluate space and organizational students to determine optimal office and department configuration.
  • Maintain and expand AAP participation University initiatives that drive diversity.  



  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in business, marketing, communication, education management, or other related fields. Master’s degree is highly preferred. 
  • Requires at least five years of progressively responsible admissions, recruiting, or enrollment experience, including supervisory/management responsibility. Preference is given to those with experience with graduate professional programs.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Proven success in recruitment of diverse students in a higher education environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of mainframe student information systems and technical expertise with application and CRM systems, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Internet end-user applications.


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
