General Description


Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, the Director of Constituent Engagement will oversee and direct outreach, communications programming, annual giving solicitation and stewardship strategies for the approximately 19,000 alumni of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. S/he will develop new alumni relations program initiatives, explore opportunities to strengthen existing programs, direct the campaign to raise unrestricted annual donations from alumni and friends of the school and oversee the strategies for communications, stewardship and events for SAIS DAR. A key focus of activity over the next two years will be directing the strategic communications, events and alumni outreach plan for SAIS’ 75th anniversary.

In this role, s/he will manage and supervise the Director of Alumni Relations, Director of Communications and Marketing, Associate Director for Annual and Reunion Giving, and the Senior Events Coordinator and evaluate staff deployment as appropriate. This position requires proven management and organizational skills, strong oral and written communication skills, an enthusiasm for working with people, the ability to manage many projects simultaneously involving alumni volunteers, and a sense of humor. An understanding of and commitment to fundraising are essential.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities


Annual Giving and Stewardship (33%) The Director of Constituent Engagement will oversee the campaign to raise annual and reunion donations for the SAIS and to steward key donor constituencies. Specifically, the Director of Constituent Engagement will manage and work with the Associate Director of Annual and Reunion Giving to:


  • Set annual and reunion giving goals and tactics.
  • In coordination with the JHU Office of Annual Giving, design a comprehensive plan and ensure its effective execution.
  • Oversee the work of the Development Coordinator in drafting all annual appeals and thank you letters for the Dean and Associate Dean, identifying new prospects annually through alumni and friends cultivation activities, and developing a clear strategy for solicitation of the Christian Herter Society.
  • Work with the Directors of Development and Director of Marketing and Communications to develop a comprehensive stewardship plan for SAIS DAR including Christian Herter Society, Legacy Circle and Fellowship which will be implemented by the Development Coordinator.


Alumni Relations (33%) This position will be responsible for the overall management of SAIS’ alumni programming. Specifically, the Director of Constituent Engagement will work with the Director of Alumni relations to:


  • Strategically develop alumni programs to build community and serve the larger fundraising goals of the school.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Relations Office, manage and coordinate SAIS’ JHU Alumni Council membership and award nominations, Alumni Trustee nominations, and collaborative regional programming.


Communications and Events (33%) This position will oversee the SAIS DAR communications strategy. Specifically, the Director of Constituent Engagement will work with the Director of Marketing and Communications and Director of Alumni Relations to:


  • Provide a strategic communications vision around key initiatives such as the school’s 75th Anniversary and new areas of academic impact.
  • Provide guidance on alumni and donor storylines and profiles for alumni communications including SAIS Magazine, the website and newsletters. Review articles for website, newsletter, and magazine.
  • With the Director of Marketing and Communications and Directors of Americas, Asia and Alumni Relations, plan a comprehensive calendar of events and supervise the Sr. Events Coordinator in his/her management and execution of them.





  • Bachelor’s degree required. Five years of related experience required, preferably in development, annual giving and alumni relations in higher education or comparable and relevant experience in a nonprofit or private sector institution. Knowledge of annual giving, and alumni and donor relations, preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Strong written communications skills, with the ability to draft persuasive correspondence. A proven track record of building programs and motivating staff and volunteers. Highly detail- oriented with strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage to deadline and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of events planning and management for small and large groups.
  • Must be adept at working effectively with diverse constituent groups and senior institutional staff. Strong public speaking/verbal communications skills, with the ability to make one-on-one and group presentations. Strong computer skills, to include Microsoft Office applications, facility with ALADIN database, and content management software, or willingness and aptitude to learn such programs. Supervisory experience. Knowledge of basic budget management for programs and events.
  • Ability to travel for business required.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
