Associate Director, Emerging Technologies Initiative

We are seeking an Associate Director, Emerging Technologies Initiative at SAIS, who will play a pivotal role in supporting the Emerging Technology Initiative's mission to explore the transformative realms of emerging technologies and their profound implications on global affairs. This position encompasses strategic planning, operational management, and relationship building to ensure the smooth functioning and growth of the initiative.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Strategic Planning and Execution (30%)

  • Collaborates closely with initiative Director to develop and implement the initiative’s strategic plan, aligning it with the mission, vision, and values of the Emerging Technologies Initiative.
  • Monitors and evaluates progress towards strategic goals with quarterly reports, providing insights for decision-making and strategic direction.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of operational plans to achieve the initiative’s objectives.
  • Acts as a trusted advisor to the Director, supporting decision-making, priority setting, resource allocation, and staff hires.
  • Prepares briefing materials, presentations, and reports for executive meetings.
  • Represents the initiative in meetings, conferences, and relevant events.


Operations Management (30%)

  • Streamlines internal processes and enhance operational efficiency, building a strong foundation for the Emerging Technologies Initiative.
  • Works with the Director, Emerging Technologies Initiative to develop and administer operating budgets to include processing related program expenses via Concur.
  • Coordinates and manages cross-functional projects and initiatives, ensuring successful execution within defined timelines and budgets.
  • Manages all aspects of the financial and administrative operation of the initiative ensuring compliance with relevant university policies and procedures.
  • Fosters effective communication and collaboration among staff, contractors, and researchers, promoting teamwork and knowledge sharing.
  • Establishes supportive team structures, such as a streamlined onboarding process, team regular meetings, job reviews, and retreats to foster engagement and growth.
  • Creates a culture of safety, creativity, and belonging among staff, contractors, and researchers.
  • Oversees the digital marketing team, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Oversees the logistic team to ensure smooth coordination of events, conferences, festivals, and workshops.
  • Ensures full compliance with copyright regulations for all publication materials, safeguarding intellectual property rights and maintaining legal and ethical standards.


Grants Development/Management (20%)

  • Develops and executes a comprehensive grant strategy to secure financial resources for the Emerging Technologies Initiative.
  • Builds a pipeline of potential foundations, sponsors, and strategic partners.
  • Prepares grant applications.
  • Conducts research to identify new grant opportunities and stay updated on relevant grant trends.
  • Manages administrative functions related to grants including pre and post award activities.


Relationship Building, Partnership Development, and Outreach (20%)

  • Identifies and pursues new partnership opportunities to advance the organization's mission and objectives.
  • Collaborates with the marketing team to create compelling visual materials, including educational graphics, newsletters, social media content, and press releases.
  • Plans and participates in outreach activities, such as conferences, workshops, and community events.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with key influencers, thought leaders, and media outlets.
  • Identifies and engages with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs, academic associations, museums, and community organizations.
  • Develops and implements an outreach strategy to expand the Emerging Technologies Initiative's reach and visibility with policymakers, academics, and at SAIS.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of social media management and digital communications.
  • Experience in event planning and coordination.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree in a related field (e.g., International Relations, Public Policy, Business Administration, or a technology-related field).
  • Interest in emerging technologies and their global implications.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
