Breakthrough ACTION Editor/Copywriter

General summary/purpose:

The Breakthrough ACTION Editor/Copywriter is a full-time member of the project Communications team, which is focused on sharing lessons learned and best practices to help advance the field of social and behavior change. The Editor/Copywriter will edit project reports, documentation, deliverables, and communications products, ensuring grammatical accuracy and adherence to the project style guide. As part of the editing process, the Editor/Copywriter will make revisions and corrections and/or recommend adjustments to text. The Editor/Copywriter will collaborate with program staff to review and finalize documents, assist with formatting/branding as needed, and triage communications products to overflow editors and external graphic designers.


In addition to editing, this person will be responsible for crafting impactful messaging and content. With guidance from the Breakthrough ACTION Communications Director, the Editor/Copywriter will conceptualize and create a variety of writing deliverables ranging from promotional emails and print pieces to project briefs, blog posts, social media messages, and more. This person will be an effective writer, creative thinker, and must be able to work on several high priority projects concurrently with minimal supervision. The position will report to the Breakthrough ACTION Communications Director.


Specific duties & responsibilities:


Editing (50%)

  • Edit project reports, documentation, deliverables, and communication products, paying close attention to grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and consistency and ensuring alignment with the project style guide.
  • Collaborate with program staff on revising and finalizing documents.
  • Update style guide as needed.
  • Ensure products are in compliance with the project Branding Strategy and Marking Plan and other contractual requirements.


Copywriting (45%)

  • Conceptualize and write various types of copy, including technical, promotional event support, web, and social media.
  • Ensure promotional content is engaging.
  • Collaborate with staff to review and refine communications products.


Other (5%)

  • Manage editing and writing schedules and production timelines.
  • Track and report status of products.
  • Format documents, including charts and tables using project templates.


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing, writing, public relations, or other related degree required.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn and apply a style guide.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Experience writing for various media, including digital (social media, blog posts, email) and print promotional (brochures, fact sheets).


Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. 


JHU Eqquivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Seven or more years related experience preferred.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.


Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Proficient with English grammar. Knowledge of APA or other standard journal styles. Familiarity with public health terminology.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
