Position Description

The Communications Assistant helps ensure that the research for the China Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is accurately and properly communicated to both general and technical audiences.

Reporting to the Director of CARI through the CARI Program Coordinator, the Communications Assistant will help ensure that CARI research is accurately and properly communicated to both general and technical audiences.

Monitoring China-Africa news and providing strategic communications advice to CARI staff: - Providing weekly news updates; - Proposing topics for op-eds and blog posts, leveraging the news cycle; - Maintaining a database of China-Africa journalists and media contacts; - Tracking CARI media mentions; - Seeking out new platforms

Maintaining consistent branding and graphic identity across all platforms:

- Managing the visual identity of the CARI website; - Branding graphs and images; - Designing promotional brochures, flyers and graphics; - Ensuring that CARI's image and media copyright practices remain up to standards.

Assisting with CARI events (annual conferences, public and private roundtables, and government briefings), including by advertising and staffing events, working closely with the Program Coordinator.


Qualifications and Skills:

Substantial prior communications experience, a thorough understanding of communications strategy and the professional uses of social media; - Excellent writing and editing abilities and a solid command of English; a strong attention to detail; - Knowledge of email marketing and website management software (Squarespace and MailChimp or equivalents); - Proficiency in Adobe InDesign or equivalent, fair graphic design skills; - Excellent time management abilities, an ability to respond to tasks on an ad-hoc basis; - Interest in China-Africa issues strongly preferred.
