Communications Associate

 

General summary/purpose:

The Communications Associate will serve as Assistant Director of Communications for the Department of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).  The person who fills this position will plan, design, implement and manage communications and marketing activities with the goal of elevating visibility and building positive awareness of alumni relations and development opportunities at SAIS.

 

In consultation with the Director of Constituent Engagement, the Communications Associate will be responsible for developing and managing the yearlong communications and strategic marketing plan for SAIS’ 75th Anniversary Celebration and other means of alumni and donor outreach. The Communications Associate will be responsible for promoting the Department's initiatives through written and oral communications and visual content across a wide variety of platforms such as SAIS Magazine, SAIS Alumni Connect newsletter, on SAIS’ website and social media. The Communications Associate will provide consultation and recommendations related to the development of communication for campaigns, significant initiatives, events and programs. The Communications Associate will be responsible for the writing and production of a wide variety of communications content, including marketing and promotion materials and publications in coordination with School and University branding and style guidelines.

 

The Communications Associate will be responsible for developing and maintaining Department web content. This will involve proactively working with faculty and staff on developing, writing and designing content for the web including text, audio and video. The Communications Associate will develop and lead a comprehensive social media strategy for DAR in close collaboration with the Communications department within the School.  A communications calendar will be created and maintained to identify events or other opportunities with natural tie-in opportunities with the work being conducted at SAIS.  Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  •  Assist with developing short and longer-term communication strategies
  • Assist with developing target audience engagement plans, including outreach strategies, for SAIS DAR and its projects
  • Implement all activities according to specified outcomes, quality standards, time frames and budget constraints, and with minimal supervision on defining, planning for and meeting work goals and timelines as agreed upon.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and day-to-day activities and assignments;
  • Identify stories that demonstrate the impact of SAIS and its alumni, faculty, staff, and partners
  • Be responsible for communications and engagement projects from concept to completion, including but not limited to promotional campaigns, alumni profiles, monthly email outreach, social media campaigns, video, photography, and web content:
    • Identify target audience segments, design engaging messages and determine optimal channels to reach audiences.
  • Provide vision for outreach and engagement materials and create high-quality products such as presentations, reports, handouts, infographics, and other communication tools;
  • Write and update content for SAIS’ 75th Anniversary website and for Giving and Alumni Relations pages on the SAIS main website; collaborate with web designers and developers to ensure website reflects brand identity;
  • Monitor and evaluate outreach strategies (conduct evaluations, review email list membership and member activity, analyze website traffic and trends with Google Analytics);
  • Maintain working relationships with communications contacts across SAIS, JHU and partner organizations;
  • Track and report key community engagement metrics;
  • Seek continuous growth and improvement opportunities.

 

Posted Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree is required and at least four years of relevant professional experience required.  The ideal candidate will have a six to eight years related experience. A strong understanding of marketing and communications strategy, development and maintenance of best practices in web and social media standards is required. Excellent written, verbal, web-based and social media skills.  Proven experience in professional communications position. Strong organizational skills.  Keen attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to translate complex topics and data into materials for lay audiences. Knowledge of and experience with web- based content management systems, experience with Drupal a plus.
