General Description

 

The Associate Director for Asia and the Middle East is a major gift officer in the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Office of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). The associate director is responsible for various aspects of the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a combined portfolio of roughly 75-100 major and principal gift prospects, including individuals and institutions. Working under the guidance of the Director of Advancement for Asia and the Middle East, the successful candidate will identify a specific number of new prospects to support SAIS Asia and Middle East-related programs, with a focus on SAIS China, Asia Programs, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center (HNC), Middle East Studies, and other identified or related programs.

 

The Associate Director will attend to a portfolio of individuals, foundation, and corporations, and select government grants, with an emphasis on pipeline development for new areas of engagement in Asia and the Middle East. Additionally, the associate director will focus on research and proposal development, bringing together appropriate participants from across Johns Hopkins to support the strategy developed by the director of advancement. From time to time, the associate director will support SAIS and HNC events and alumni activities in the Asia or Middle East regions.

 

The Associate Director also will work closely with SAIS team members working on fundraising initiatives related to Asia and the Middle East. Specifically, the associate director will coordinate with the Assistant Director of Annual Giving to formulate annual mailings, email blasts and phonathon calls on behalf of Asia Programs, Middle East Studies, the HNC and other related constituents. The associate director also will support the development coordinator in properly stewarding donors who have created named fellowships and donors in Asia or the Middle East who qualify for mandatory stewardship.

 

The Associate Director will often serve as a primary representative of SAIS activities in Asia and the Middle East - in a variety of settings, interacting with both internal and external stake holders. The associate director also interacts often with SAIS China, HNC Washington Office and other SAIS Asia program faculty and staff, as well as greater Hopkins faculty and staff to advance the mission of SAIS and Johns Hopkins in Asia and the Middle East.

Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for over 60 years. SAIS was founded to provide a practical approach to training students in international leadership and foreign relations, and to provide mid-career educational opportunities for those already working in related fields. Today, SAIS offers the M.A., M.I.P.P., and Ph.D. degrees and enrolls 580 full-time students on the Washington, DC campus, 190 students at SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy, and 180 students at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China.

 

Qualifications

          

Bachelor's degree required. Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience required. Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.  

 

Ability to multi-task while working under pressure and meeting deadlines required. Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to execute timely follow-through on projects is essential. Good sense of humor and ability to work with a variety of people required. Experience with event planning is necessary.

 

Experience with travel overseas, a willingness and ability to travel (both domestically and internationally) for several months a year, spread over multiple trips, is expected. Up to (and sometimes exceeding) 25% of working time will be spent in the Middle East and Asia regions. This position will be responsible for pipeline development of new markets; therefore, the position requires the ability to travel freely within the target regions to specific countries and markets as determined by the Director of Advancement for Asia & the Middle East, the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations and by the Dean of SAIS.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Advanced training in international studies or other related field is strongly preferred. Five or more years of experience preferred. Demonstrated experience working in fundraising/development, an interest in or experience working in Asia and/or in U.S.-China relations, and proficiency in an Asian or Middle Eastern language preferred (with an additional preference for Korean, Mandarin or Arabic). Familiarity with University nomenclature, protocols and programs as well as any previous experience with ALADIN (JHU Development Database) or other complex donor databases.
