Sr. Laboratory Coordinator

We are seeking a Senior Laboratory Coordinator  who assists the Laboratory Manager in the daily operation of the SKCCC Biospecimen Repository Core Laboratory. They are in charge of overseeing daily operations, worker training, oversight and participation in the bioprocessing of blood specimens, quality control, supply and specimen inventory, and answering enquiries from study team members.  In addition, they will assist in the oversight of the operating budget, and the biorepository.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

 

Processing (80%)

  • Monitors technical staff to ensure they follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to process research biospecimens
  • Performs duties, including: preparation of media and reagents, process research biospecimens according to each research protocol
  • Assists in managing biospecimen inventory, shipping, and billing records.
  • Working in repository: will be shipping biological specimens and cell lines to investigators at other institutions (international/domestic shipments of biological according to federal regulations), depositing and retrieving frozen specimens from liquid nitrogen freezers and minus 80c degree freezers.
  • Maintains accurate data records. Updating of database and documentation in Laboratory notebooks. Maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment.
  • Uses various software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Prepares invoices for work completed. Monitors dry ice and prepares dry ice invoices

 

Administrative (20%)

  • Compiles and reviews Quality Control records with the QA/QC manager
  • Monitors accuracy of current instructions for multiple protocols; modifies instructions as required with approval
  • Reports to the program manager and consults with the QA/QC manager
  • Participates in the quality control process, i.e. when receiving samples (primarily blood), determines if the sample is of acceptable quality to process; creates deviation log entry if needed; records receiving errors in the communications log and/or problem log
  • Recommends revisions for Standard Operating Procedures, where needed
  • Assists in the coordination of data collection/entry for monthly billing
  • Develops and delivers employee training
  • Initiates the process for equipment repair when needed
  • Demonstrates highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates flexibility and establishes priorities and work plans to compensate for unanticipated changes in work volume to adequately meet departmental needs as deemed necessary by the lab manager
  • Informs lab manager in a timely manner when difficult problems, unusual development or activities occur
  • Demonstrates the ability to relate well and work well with all levels of staff
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines
  • Uses discretion when discussing confidential matters
  • Participates in the development and implementation of lab goals and objectives, development of PK sheets (study timelines) and study budgets
  • Participates in problem-solving process based in comprehensive analysis of situations while demonstrating the use of a logical, reasoned, factual and systematic approach
  • Recognizes limitations and seeks help from appropriate resources when needed
  • Meets with clients as needed
  • Inventory management: monitors supply inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, documents orders upon receipt
  • Participates in conducting monthly in-service training for technical staff

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field
  • Formal training in medical technology and/or laboratory technology or related
  • A minimum of three years, preferably five years, related laboratory experience required
  • Technical knowledge and laboratory experience
  • Additional education may be substituted for years of work experience

 

* JHU Equivalency Formula:  18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: 

  • Must have knowledge of Internet, software applications, and Microsoft packages (word processing, Excel, ACCESS, etc.) and database management skills
  • Excellent writing, spelling and proofreading skills required
  • Must be able to keep confidential information
  • Has an understanding of standard office processes, methods, and systems based upon training and prior experience
  • Will address problems by selecting alternatives from defined options
  • Required to use judgment based on the analysis of facts, set precedents, and previous experience
  • Identify issues that require input/advice from supervisor or faculty

Starting Salary Range: $39,310 - $54,060 annually (commensurate with experience)
