Director of Constituent Engagement

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, the Director of Constituent Engagement will oversee and direct outreach, communications programming, annual giving solicitation and stewardship strategies for the approximately 20,000 alumni of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. S/he will develop new alumni relations program initiatives, explore opportunities to strengthen existing programs, direct the campaign to raise unrestricted annual donations from alumni and friends of the school and oversee the strategies for communications, stewardship and events for SAIS DAR.

 

In this role, s/he will manage and supervise the Associate Director of Alumni Relations, Assistant Director for Annual Giving, and evaluate staff deployment as appropriate. This position requires proven management and organizational skills, strong oral and written communication skills, an enthusiasm for working with people, the ability to manage many projects simultaneously involving alumni volunteers, and a sense of humor. An understanding of and commitment to fundraising are essential.

 

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:

 

Alumni Relations (50%) This position will be responsible for the overall management of SAIS’ alumni programming. Specifically, the Director of Constituent Engagement will work with the Director of Alumni relations to:

 

  • Refine and implement SAIS’ strategies for engaging and building a strong and active alumni community and serve the larger fundraising goals.
  • Increase alumni engagement including pipeline for alumni leaders and developing opportunities for affinity groups.
  • Define key performance indicators and implement enterprise level measurement, analytics, and reporting methods to gauge success.
  • Explore and identify ways to integrate social media into business strategies and marketing campaigns.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Relations Office, manage and coordinate SAIS’ JHU Alumni Council membership and award nominations, Alumni Trustee nominations, and collaborative regional programming.

 

Annual Giving and Pipeline (30%) The Director of Constituent Engagement will oversee the campaign to raise annual and reunion donations for the SAIS and to steward key donor constituencies. Specifically, the Director of Constituent Engagement will manage and work with the Director of Development and Assistant Director of Annual Giving to:

 

  • In partnership with Development, assign and manage the Pipeline Program is to maintain and build upon the portfolios of gift officers at SAIS and Regional Programs.
    The pipeline nurtures new and established partnerships through thoughtful engagement to identify and qualify prospects at all levels of giving, increase the number of donors, and alumni participation.
  • In coordination with the JHU Office of Annual Giving, design a comprehensive plan and ensure its effective execution.
  • Oversee the work of the Assistant Director of Annual Giving in drafting all annual appeals and thank you letters for the Dean and Associate Dean, identifying new prospects annually through alumni and friends cultivation activities, and developing a clear strategy for solicitation of the Christian Herter Society.
  • Work with the Director of Development and Senior Development Coordinator to develop a comprehensive stewardship plan for SAIS DAR including the Dean’s Circle, Christian Herter Society, Legacy Circle, and Fellowship.

 

Communications and Events (20%) This position will oversee the SAIS DAR communications strategy. Specifically, the Director of Constituent Engagement will work to:

  • Provide a strategic communications vision around key initiatives and new areas of academic impact.
  • Provide guidance on alumni and donor storylines and profiles for alumni communications including SAIS Magazine, the website, and newsletters. Review articles for website, newsletter, and magazine.
  • With Development, the Marketing and Communications, and Admissions leadership, plan a comprehensive calendar of events and manage the execution of them.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of related experience required, preferably in development, annual giving and alumni relations in higher education or comparable and relevant experience in a nonprofit or private sector institution.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of annual giving, and alumni and donor relations, preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Strong written communications skills, with the ability to draft persuasive correspondence.
  • A proven track record of building programs and motivating staff and volunteers.
  • Highly detail- oriented with strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage to deadline and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of events planning and management for small and large groups.

 

Must be adept at working effectively with diverse constituent groups and senior institutional staff. Strong public speaking/verbal communications skills, with the ability to make one-on-one and group presentations. Strong computer skills, to include Microsoft Office applications, facility with ALADIN database, and content management software, or willingness and aptitude to learn such programs. Supervisory experience. Knowledge of basic budget management for programs and events. Ability to travel for business required.
