Founded in 1943 and a Johns Hopkins division since 1950, The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for more than 70 years.  As a highly selective graduate institution with a distinguished faculty, SAIS consistently ranks as one of the top schools of international relations in the world. Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Director, the Assistant Director of Financial Aid (ADFA) will serve as the resident expert on the financial aid database and integrated systems. The ADFA counsels and assists current students in resolving financial aid issues and makes determinations regarding financial aid awards and/or eligibility for student employment, in accordance with applicable regulations, statutes and policies. The ADFA counsels both prospective and current students, regarding available financing options, program requirements and loan repayment terms; evaluates applications, performs federally mandated needs analysis to determine eligibility, awards funds and re-evaluates eligibility as required to ensure compliance with program regulations.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide direct support to the Director of Financial Aid, serve as the liaison between the financial aid office and the Information Technology Department at SAIS, and serve as the expert functional user for PowerFAIDS and SIS systems in the financial aid office.
  • Assist the Information Technology Department at SAIS and Mt. Washington campuses with modification and refinement of the computerized data processing system PowerFAIDS.
  • Perform system configurations and update software parameters in the PowerFAIDS database, maintain and troubleshoot daily financial aid processes via the PowerFAIDS database, and train staff as needed on PowerFAIDS processes and functionalities.
  • Counsels students regarding the availability of aid, application procedures, University policies, federal and State regulations, the process of needs analysis and necessary documentation, and the availability of student employment.
  • Reviews applications for financial aid; analyzes financial situations and needs; determines appropriate packaging of aid; adjusts packages to meet changes in student eligibility criteria based on Federal and State regulations and institutional policies.
  • Oversees administration of the Federal Work-Study program, including monitoring expenditures, development and maintenance of budgets, databases and other record-keeping systems.
  • Maintains EDE downloads, printing/importing/exporting ISIR’s, correction of EDE records, disbursements, loan reconciliation and reporting to the Federal Processor.
  • Determines need for and evaluates supporting documentation such as income tax returns, terms of wills and testaments, bankruptcy filings, escrow accounts, social security statements, unemployment and welfare documents, tax assessments to determine effect on financial need.
  • Conducts in-person entrance and exit loan counseling sessions, keeps abreast of all State and federal rules, regulations, and guidelines governing various types of financial aid and ensures compliance in assigned area of responsibility, and prepares reports, as needed; revises forms and prepares informational brochures in designated area of expertise.
  • Responsible for maintenance and development of Financial Aid website - including fellowship announcements, regulatory updates, and revision of forms online, supervises and trains Financial Aid staff, temporary employees and/or student workers, and presents financial aid information at Open House, Student Orientation, and via webinars.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree required, three years related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Experience and familiarity with electronic processes and financial aid databases. Familiarity with federal financial aid regulations and knowledge of US Department of Education processing systems and software.

JHU Equivalency Formula:

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
