Mental Health Services Clinician
Student Health and Well-Being (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic, organized, and motivated Mental Health Services Clinician to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the well-being of a diverse community of learners. Reporting to the Associate Director of Consultation Services, the Mental Health Services Clinician is part of a team of clinicians who will focus on providing supportive services to students enrolled in academic programs on JHU’s Washington, DC, campus, and students in JHU’s online graduate programs.
The DC Mental Health Services Clinician focuses generalist clinical skills and experience, along with expertise in outreach, education, case management, and consultation as essential mental health interventions. The person in this position works collaboratively with primary care, psychiatry, and health promotion staff, along with colleagues in DC Mental Health Services and university-wide Mental Health Services, to provide care that emphasizes holistic wellness and mental well-being and that leverages students’ resilience and other key skills.
As with all staff within Mental Health Services (MHS), this Mental Health Services Clinician will also operate as a generalist who provides a full range of clinical services including initial consultations, individual goal-directed therapy, workshops, groups, and crisis intervention. The clinician will also provide consultation services to faculty and staff who are concerned about learners’ emotional well-being. Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Duties (60%)
- This position’s consultation and clinical activities will be based in both Maryland and Washington, D.C. clinics, and may provide consultation and clinical activities for learners located in Virginia. Licensure in all jurisdictions is required within 6 months of hire.
- Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal, academic, and professional goals.
- Provides culturally informed direct clinical services, including initial consultations, intake assessments, single-session therapy, individual, group and relationship counseling, and crisis intervention for a diverse community of graduate students at the DC Campus and for JHU’s community of online learners within service jurisdiction.
- Utilizes both flexible and goal-oriented approaches to individual treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy, often in collaboration with treating psychiatrists.
- Collaborates with providers with SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team.
- Consults, as appropriate, with providers in the community to facilitate continuity of care.
Outreach Duties (20%)
- Develops and implements opportunities for informal interactions with students to reduce barriers to counseling, which may include offering drop-in hours, attending student events, and participating in other a range of student-led and student-focused programs.
- Consults with Health Promotion and Case Management to proactively address students’ holistic wellness needs and to help eliminate barriers to counseling and mental health services.
- Participates in outreach and educational activities, including resource fairs, community meetings, and training to JHU faculty, staff and students.
Collaborative & Consultative Activities (20%)
- Participates in development of flexible mental health services such as group counseling and single-session treatment approaches.
- Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidenced-based group intervention strategies.
- Provides consultation to student affairs leaders, faculty, and staff who are concerned about student well-being and safety. Participates in case consultation, student risk management, peer chart reviews, and other departmental committees as requested or assigned.
- Participates in MHS recruitment and hiring processes.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, or social work from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 2 years post-graduate clinical experience.
- Licensed as a mental health provider in required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description (LMFT, LCPC, LCSW-C) or license-eligible (must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire).
- SUBSTITUTION/EQUIVALENCY:Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology from an APA accredited program and completion of an APA internship may substitute for the required 2 years of post-graduate experience. Licensure must be obtained as a psychologist in required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description within 12 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral Degree (DSW, Ph.D., Psy.D. or relevant terminal degree) from an accredited program.
- Clinical experience in a university setting strongly preferred.
- Experience working with international students strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in Mandarin strongly preferred.

Additional Information (Working Conditions)
- Schedule. The clinician in this role will work three weekdays, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and two weekdays, 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Up to one or two days per week (depending on needs of clinic and with supervisor approval) may be eligible for remote work.
- This position is designated as a Required Attendance Employee, designated as vital to the operation of a work group, so may be required to work during a university closure in response to operational needs.
