Sr. Communications Manager
Jhpiego is seeking a dynamic and strategic Sr. Communications Manager to manage and execute communications planning to promote AlignMNH, a global initiative founded in 2020 to accelerate progress in improving maternal and newborn health (MNH) and preventing stillbirths around the globe. Additional communications leadership support will be given to USAID’s MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) project; and USAID’s Reaching Impact, Saturation, and Epidemic Control (RISE)
Project.
Specific to AlignMNH, this position will oversee communications, content strategy and digital media. This includes leading the implementation of innovative approaches to disseminate knowledge through social media, newsletters, events, the knowledge hub and other engagement and outreach strategies to amplify and promote and other, to include specifically the International Maternal Newborn Health Conference 2026 (IMNHC 2026). This position will promote and enhance the exchange of maternal and newborn health technical knowledge through managing an integrated content planning strategy which includes content creation, curation, planning and research by creatively engaging audiences online and producing engaging content types that resonate with users. The position is responsible for contributing to the overall content strategy of the initiative’s public facing website known as the knowledge hub and a multitude of digital media channels (new and existing) and other convenings (in addition to IMNHC 2026).
Additionally, this position is responsible for communicating the mission, country programs, technical leadership, resources, and success stories, as well as for leading and planning external events and for developing strategic communications activities to various targeted audiences for the MCGL and RISE projects. This includes seeking opportunities to highlight project leadership, country programs and work, initiatives, products and results through featured articles, collateral, photography, web and social media mediums, and high-visibility domestic and international events, meetings, and conferences. This position also manages MCGL’s and RISE’s robust publications pipeline, acts as primary liaison on communications for MCGL and RISE country teams, and leads communications reporting processes and global adherence to USAID branding and marking guidelines.
Responsibilities
Communications
- Leads overall content strategy planning for AlignMNH, RISE and MCGL and detailed communications activities to include messaging, brand identity, tactics across all communications channels (inclusive of social and digital media, knowledge hub, e-newsletters, etc.).
- Acts as key partner and contributor of deep knowledge expertise to lead the development, design and delivery of communications plans/initiatives and support broader project and organizational strategies
- Ensures communications aspects of program(s) and practices are well managed, meet organizational needs, comply with internal and external requirements, and align with organizational priorities
- In collaboration with project leadership and technical contributors, supports teams to develop presentations for donors and other external stakeholders on the projects, areas of technical expertise, achievements across countries, and other priority content
- Supports the development of project deliverables (e.g. fact sheets, technical and programmatic briefers, capacity statements, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual reports)
- Conducts impact assessments for proposed changes to programs / policies
- Engages, manages and influences internal / external cross-functional partners to develop / deliver integrated solutions
- Identifies areas for improved alignment of programs, plans and processes and makes revisions/modifications that align with overarching strategies, organizational goals and workforce needs
- Keeps abreast of the latest trends and implements strategies to engage target users in thoughtful dialogue, debate, knowledge sharing, and problem solving through meaningful engagement among target users and partners. Builds on, complements, and strengthens coordination with partner organizations to align shared efforts and investments.
- Co-leads the IMNHC Communications and Advocacy Committee which will align the MNH community in partner engagement efforts in lead up to the IMNHC conference by managing overall communications and technical advocacy strategy
Content Strategy
- Provides strategic direction for the ongoing development of the AlignMNH Knowledge Hub and oversees day-to-day activities to manage the site, including supporting content curation and development, partner outreach, and user engagement.
- Manages MCGL and RISE communications platforms and external communications channels to include web pages, social media and newsletters.
- Collaborates with other content team members, creative teams, and writers to implement the strategy including overseeing writing style and tone for all content and content governance guidelines for tone, style, and voice of all content, and ensuring they are followed
- Works closely with monitoring and evaluation colleagues to conduct periodic content audits and ensure that content strategy is meeting intended audiences with the right information, at the right time, in the right way and to continue to improve content delivery and promotion (analyzing analytics to evaluate whether it’s working or not)
- Manages and oversees all content for communications materials in preparation for the in-person and virtual events to include conferences (especially IMNHC), exhibitions, satellite events, webinar series, etc.
- Leads efforts that implement strategies to expand the depth, breadth, and reach of communications and dissemination platforms with the goal of establishing the assets as a vibrant and multi-directional virtual community.
- Leads the deployment and execution of promotion strategies for both the in-person conference and virtual engagement series through social media, e-blasts, media engagement, and other digital promotion strategies
- Ensures consistent project branding and messaging across all event and conference materials
Convenings
- Promotes and enhance the exchange of project-specific technical knowledge through supporting strategic, logistical and media elements before, during and after IMNHC conferences
- Supports project-specific convenings including webinars and events, both live and virtual, including but not limited to: identifying venues, liaising with partners and technical teams to manage agendas and programs, drafting high-level invitations, managing RSVPs, planning booths and exhibitions, overseeing contract processes and deliverables from vendor contracts, ordering catering, coordinating shipping, and managing promotional materials.
- Ensures consistent project branding and messaging across all event and conference material
- Acts as primary communications point of contact MCGL and RISE with country program
- Reviews and approves country concept notes, external facing communications products, invite list, etc. for in-country events
- Leads communications capacity building efforts and tools for country teams
- Advises on process and key elements of RISE and MCGL country-level events, media engagement, Mission and Ministry of Health buy in, documentation/ dissemination, etc.

- Provides coaching, guidance and mentorship to direct report(s) where needed
- Sets targets and objectives for assigned area and delivers results
- Grows team expertise to align with program and organizational direction while continually looking for ways to provide / enhance the value delivered
- Leads a high-performing team and provides ongoing feedback and performance reviews
- Liaises with global marketing and communications vendors and implement related activities
- Tracks, monitors and effectively addresses and / or rewards performance of team members
- Manages employees in compliance with all HR policies, procedures, guidelines
- Shares knowledge, information, skills and subject matter expertise among the team and ensures the timely communication of issues while encouraging good working relationships with other functions / teams

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proven experience in public affairs and marketing communications
- Proven experience with social media tools and websites
- Prior experience with SEO and content marketing strategies
- Strong writing and editing skills
- High degree of decision making and problem-solving abilities
- Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Experience with event design and management abilities as well as attention to detail
- Ability to handle budgets and produce within these set parameters
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, a high level of organization and ability to balance competing priorities
- Self-starting capabilities and comfortable with qualitative and quantitative evaluation
- Demonstrated ability to work with both scientific/technical (e.g. technical program briefs) and non-technical (e.g. marketing) materials
- Ability to project a professional image and communicate positively and effectively as a representative of Jhpiego, both within The Johns Hopkins University community and external organizations and donors
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Ability to travel domestically and internally up to 30% of the time as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related field.
- Five years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in public health communication, global health, strategic communications.
