Systems Engineer


The General Nature or Purpose of the Job:

Position supports IT and computer operations in Radiation Oncology at Sibley Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Washington, DC NW. The position reports to the Lead IT Systems Engineer in Radiation Oncology at SMH and also to the IT Director for Radiation Oncology. The successful candidate will share responsibilities for deploying equipment and for maintaining the readiness and service of the IT equipment used for clinical operations in two SMH clinics. This includes deploying, managing, and monitoring systems and applications that are critical to the Department’s missions of patient care, teaching, and research. The candidate in this position will assist the Team Lead and Director in determining strategies for improving uptime, performance, and accessibility while containing costs in each clinic. This position will assist in rollout of upgrades and/or replacements of existing technologies; identifying costs, organizational impacts and training needs. Occasional travel to the Suburban Radiation Oncology office in North Bethesda will be required.


The Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the Job:

Virtualization and Storage

  • Support and utilize applications that are installed in virtual terminal server/Citrix environments in order to reduce costs and decrease time required to add new server based systems.
  • Train Department staff to be proficient in accessing virtual resources and applications.


Systems Maintenance and Administration

  • Monitor workstation and server health and performance using appropriate tools. Utilize scripts to monitor and manage event logs, applications, and agents. Resolve issues as they occur by analyzing logs and recommending changes to these and similar programs.
  • Monitor and implement appropriate prevention measures.
  • Utilize the hospital or clinic’s Active Directory OU to manage user access to resources and applications.
  • Review, recommend, and install upgrades to workstation hardware and software as needed on a regular basis. Coordinate closely with other teams in Radiation Oncology and Hospital IT and users.
  • Repair or facilitate repairs of workstation equipment and relevant clinical equipment.
  • Monitor storage and backups. Recommend and implement upgrades in advance of critical state.
  • Evaluate Systems and Applications in the clinics, ensuring compliance with any and all Departmental and JHU institutional IT policies.
  • Create and/or modify technical documentation for Department resources and applications to ensure that newly hired staff can quickly learn to be proficient in utilizing the supported applications and resources.
  • Act as a liaison to users and to IT and other groups to facilitate changes and upgrades.

  • All IT servers and applications, IT management equipment, as well as on-line tools and resources.


Requirements for the Position:

  • Bachelor's degree.  Five (5) years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement industry standards and appropriate methodology for efficiently deploying computer systems.
  • Proficiency in computer systems management and administration.
  • Proficiency in managing and maintaining windows based operating systems like Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows Server.
  • Proficiency with mobile and handheld devices such as smartphones, iphone, ipad, android, etc.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
