Research Program Assistant

Center Brief

 

The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research studies of infectious diseases and behavioral health, and a training program.

 

The Center has a mission to work in partnership with American Indian tribes to raise the health status and self-sufficiency of American Indian people to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) research, 2) service, and 3) training.

 

General Summary:

 

The Community Health Specialist is based in Whiteriver, Arizona and reports to the Senior Research Program Coordinator and works with the Center’s field and Baltimore-based behavioral health staff. This employee maintains knowledge of all of the Center's behavioral health, infectious disease and training projects and may assist with other Center-wide programmatic duties on occasion as they arise.

 

The Center is located within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and has a mission to work in partnership with American Indian and Alaska Native communities to raise health status, self-sufficiency and health leadership to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) Research; 2) Training/Education; 3) Service.

The Community Health Specialist will serve as a facilitator of a sexual and reproductive health intervention on a behavioral health research study which targets American Indian youth and families. The Community Health Specialist will work actively on this study which is related to teen pregnancy prevention.

 

Study Specific Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  1. Complete training and prove proficient in the teen pregnancy prevention curriculum.
  2. Deliver the curriculum to small groups of peers during summer basketball camps
  3. Deliver the curriculum to youth-parent dyads after camp in a home, community or office-based setting.
  4. Deliver the curriculum to small groups of youth and parents together, after camp in a community or office-based setting.
  5. Provide referrals for youth and families to outside services and entities as necessary.
  6. Work closely with the Program Coordinator to ensure the curriculum is delivered with fidelity and quality.

 

General Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  1. Participate in regular meetings with the Baltimore-based team through conference calls and Skype
  2. Facilitate timely and accurate intervention delivery including:
    1. Ongoing completion of fidelity monitoring logs
    2. Meeting with study staff to receive feedback on intervention delivery
    3. Participation in curriculum booster trainings
  3. Assist with dissemination of project findings in community-based meetings

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for some experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

 

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience..  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Some college courses preferred.
  • Some related coursework or administrative experience
  • One year of work experience in a related field or health setting.
  • General knowledge of sexual and reproductive health education.
  • Current CPR, BLS or approved substitute certificate.
  • Apache speaker.

Other:                                                                                                                                                

  • Current driver’s license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required
  • Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed.  Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Hourly Rate Range: $11.95hr - $16.44; commensurate with experience

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
